Battle of Antietam
Sam: On September 16, 1862 the union and confederate met at Sharpsburg, Maryland. This would be later known as the bloodiest battle in the civil war. On September 17th, the Union attacked all day, while the Confederate took a huge beating. On the 18th, the wounded Confederates retreated to Virginia. Though, in the eye of general George McClellan, this battle was considered a Union victory, but this battle could be considered a loss for both side. With about 12,401 union troops being killed, wounded, missing or captured and anywhere from 10,000–12,000 confederate troops killed, wounded, missing or captured this became known as the bloodiest day in U.S. military history.
