Emma: In late April of 1863, the Confederate forces (led by John Pemberton) and the Union forces (led by Ulysses S. Grant) fight south of Vicksburg. As the battle continues, Grant decides to lead the Confederates more inland to Vicksburg. As they move, the Union wins small victories at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge. The Confederatesoldiers surrender at the battle on July 4th, 1863, with a loss of 32,492 soldiers. The Union claims victory with a loss of only 4,910 soldiers.
