Sam: On June 9, 1864-March 25, 1865 was the Siege of Petersburg, also known as The Battle of Petersburg. The Siege of Petersburg was a series of battle fought around the cities of Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. All of these battles took place during the Civil War. They began after union General Ulysses S. Grant had a unsuccessful attack on Petersburg. Then Grant and his troops constructed trenches surrounding the eastern part of Richmond extending to the outskirts of Petersburg. Grant knew the city was a huge supply hub the Confederate army. Eventually, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his troops abandoned the city in 1865. This would eventually lead to their surrender at Appomattox Court House.
